Birthday Cake from Awfully Chocolate

Date: 30th June 2010
Venue: Awfully Chocolate
Country: Singapore
Cuisine: Baked Goods

Birthday cake for Shin. Decided to try something "different". Well, we know chocolate cakes ain't anything unique. But considering we have been having cakes from the same few cake shops for years, we decided to go for a change. Heard about this particular brand of cakes, so ordered one 6" All Chocolate Cake. They do have 2 other choices: Chocolate Banana and Chocolate Rum & Cherry but we decided to have the original dark chocolate cake with dark chocolate fudge.

As understood from their website, they have "our own proprietary recipe of chocolate packed to our strict specifications of cocoa bean grade and percentage of cocoa to cocoa butter," exclusive to them. In a sense, they are trying to say that the taste of their chocolate cake is unique. So a tasting of their cake is in order.

2 signature 'marketing gimmicks' of theirs is that they do not display the cakes they sell at the counters and they do not sell cakes in slices. In addition, they have just one design for most of their cakes: that of chocolate fudge spread all over the cake. If you need any wordings, they can do it on the spot in the store itself, just like ours.

Smooth dark chocolate fudge sandwiched by 2 layers of not-too-sweet moist dark chocolate cake. With the chocolate flavour, sugar and moisture level striking the right balance, you will not feel overpowered by the cake. At least, we can eat our fill without feeling 'sick'. We have a suspicion that the cake is steamed instead of baked, judging by the moisture level and the texture. So is the chocolate really unique? Sorry, we cannot vouch for that, as we are really no chocolate connoisseurs.

Our verdict? We like the cake.

Dinner at Ajisen Ramen, Lot 1

Category : , , ,

Date: 25th June 2010
Venue: Ajisen Ramen, Lot 1, Choa Chu Kang
Country: Singapore
Cuisine: Japanese

Don't we just love Fridays as they signal the start of the weekends. This Friday we decided to treat ourselves to a bowl of hot and spicy Ramen, despite the fact that we had been nursing sore throats for about a week. We joined the queue at almost 8pm but it moved pretty fast and soon we were seated. However, dad and dec were so hungry that we did not have the chance to take a snapshot of their food before they tucked in. So these are the rest of our orders.

Spicy Ramen (S$6.80 / US$4.90)
Ramen with spicy soup base, topped with bean sprouts, minced meat, seaweed, spring onion and braised egg. One of the items for Ajisen's Anniversary Specials, hence the price.The springy ramen went well with the pork-base milky soup. Like this one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tom Yam Ramen Set (S$13.80 / US$10.00)
Ramen set includes 1 ramen, 1 alacarte item and 1 drink. Fusion food combining japanese ramen with Thai tom yam seafood (squid, crab-stick and scallop) soup and served with a lime. The effect of springy ramen with the sourish and mildly spicy is good, but not for food purist though. Notice the size of the spoon?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Fried Tofu (Alacarte item for Chicken Teriyaki Ramen set)
Otherwise known as Agadashi Tofu. Deep fried silken tofu in broth made of dashi, mirin, and shō-yu (Japanese soy sauce), and topped with finely chopped spring onion and grated bonito flakes(dried fish) are sprinkled on top. Ordered this specially for Baby C.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Silverfish (Alacarte item for Tom yam Ramen set)
Silverfish coated with flour and deep fried till crisp.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Fried Prawn
2 deep fried prawns served with mayo, that came with the kids B meal.

Dinner at Fengshan Food Centre

Category : , , , , ,

Date: 23rd June 2010
Venue: Fengshan Food Centre
Country: Singapore
Cuisine: Chinese

We were on familiar grounds at 85 Fengshan Food Centre in the mature neighbourhood estate of Bedok. Our childhood home was just directly opposite.Having moved away for 10 years now, we still missed the food there. With stalls serving a great variety of quality food 24 hours a day, the food centre is packed with people throughout the day, especially at night when diners throng the place for supper.

Stall No. 01-07 - Xing Ji Rou Cou Mian
Rou Cou Mian or Bak Chor Mee (S$3.00/ US$2.15)

Thin yellow noodles in hot pork broth with minced pork and pork balls. The noodles soup is considerably more popular than the dry version. The secret of success, we believe, lies with its broth. The stall owners are so confident of the taste of their broth, that they do not serve a small dish of soya sauce with sliced chilli, together with their noodles, as is the usual practice. Instead the sliced chilli are carelessly sprinkled in the bowl. The noodles are highly popular, be prepared for a long wait if you come at peak hours.

Stall No.#01-51 -  Bedok 85 Fried Oyster Omelette
Oyster Omelette (S$3.00/ US$2.15)

Love their oyster omelette. Eggs fried till slightly crisp to the bite, with just the right amount of starch added. Oysters added are still raw to the bite. The chilli sauce served is slightly sour, with vinegar added to enhance the taste.
Rating = 4.5/5

Stall No. #01-58 - Chan BBQ
Cockles Hot Plate (S$5.00/ US$3.60)
Cockles with sambal chilli and onion on hot plate. Good stuff.
Rating = 4.25/5

L.W. Cake Shop - Blk 84 #01-55
Cream Cakes (S$1.00/ US$0.70)
Traditional cream cakes, nowadays rarely seen, except for older neighbourhood cake shops and bakeries. We bought a slice of blueberry and a slice of chocolate cake home for dessert.

Lunch at Restoran CM, JB

Category : ,

Date: 19 June 2010
Venue: Restoran CM, 亚明潮式鱼汤, Johor Bahru, Johor
Country: Malaysia
Cuisine: Chinese

Restoran CM is a middle-class eatery located at the 1st storey of a terrace shop house unit. We patronise the place from time to time for their signature fried fish head, though the prices are not really economical for the serving size.

Fried Fish Meat, 炒鱼片 (RM17.00 / US$5.25)
Their signature dish, with choice of fish head, fish meat or fish stomach. A spicy dish, stir-fried with lots of dried chilli, ginger, spring onion, and oil, the sliced fish meat taste tender and a little on the salty side, with a hint of fermented black bean.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fish Soup, 鱼片汤 (RM9.00 / US$2.75)
Good clear fish soup, with sliced fish, salted mustard leaves and green leafy vegetables. The sliced fish goes well with sliced chilli in light soya sauce or minced garlic.
Beancurd with Minced Meat, 肉碎豆腐 (RM6.00 / US$1.85)
Steam beancurd topped with minced pork and mushroom cooked with fermented soya bean.
Dinner at Dian Xiao Er, Changi Airport
Category : , , ,
Date: 18th June 2010
Venue: Dian Xiao Er, Changi Airport, Terminal 3, Level 3
Country: Singapore
Cuisine: Chinese
Meal: Dinner
A treat for ourselves on a Friday evening, rounded up with watching the planes at the viewing mall.
Duck Roasted with Angelica Herb
Dian Xiao Er's signature dish is roast duck. They offer 3 choices: duck roasted with angelica herb, ten wonder herb or wild ginseng. We chose the first one and requested for more gravy. We are never fans of roast duck, yet we are sold on this one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Fish Maw with Seafood
A traditional chinese thick soup with lots of fish maw and crab meat. Add a dash of pepper and black vinegar to enhance the taste.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Baby Kai-Lan with Salted Fish & Lime
Crisp baby kai-lan leaves, with a hint of lime and little cubes of salted fish.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Prawn Ball with Dragonfruit Sauce
This dish consists of deep fried prawn balls, dressed in red dragonfruit (otherwise known as Pitaya) sauce and served with diced white dragonfruit and strawberries. It is listed in Dian Xiao Er's healthier choice series for the nutritional value of dragonfruit. Pitaya is the fruit of several cactus species and supposedly has medicinal benefit, such as lowers cholesterol and blood pressure and contains cancer-preventing antioxidants. However, due to the bland taste of the fruit and hence the sauce, and the strong after-taste of oil in the prawn balls, we did not fancy this dish.

Dinner at Bedok South Food Centre

Date: 11th June 2010
Venue: Bedok South Food Centre

Popped by Bedok South Food Centre after work to satisfy our cravings for the Char Kway Tiao.

Stall No. 178 - Hill Street Fried Kway Tiao
Fried Kway Tiao (S$2.50/ US$1.80)
Flat rice noodles, fat yellow Chinese noodles, bean sprouts fried in lard with eggs, chinese sausage, spring onion, cockles and dark soya sauce. The famous Bedok South fried kway tiao. We were lucky to get the last serving all wrapped up as the stallholders were closing their stall and that is all they can offer us. :-) The overall combination taste moist and just a little sweet thanks to the dark sweet sauce.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stall No. 199 - Bedok South Niu Ji Prawn Noodles
Hokkien Fried Noodles (S$3.00/ US$2.15)
Fat yellow Chinese noodles, fat rice noodles, bean sprouts fried in lard with strips of fish cake, squid and prawns. Add chilli to taste and squeeze some lime juice on it for maximum effect. The stall has a steady crowd and various newspaper clippings pasted on its stall front to advertise its food. However, we do not like what we had, as we felt that the fat yellow noodles taste overcooked with a strong akaline overture. Guess we caught them on a bad day..:-(
Stall No. 215 - Kim Guan Kee Hot & Cold Drinks
Pineapple Drink (S$0.50/ US$0.35)
Classic hawker centre offering. Drink made by boiling pineapple in water and adding sugar to taste. They even added a few chunks of pineapple for the effect. Not commonly seen nowadays.
Dinner at Bedok Food Centre
Category : , ,
Date: 9th June 2010
Venue: Bedok Food Centre
Country: Singapore
Cuisine: Chinese
Meal: Dinner
Popped by Bedok Food Centre after work to try out the famous cuttlefish kangkong, which is rarely sold in hawker centres and foodcourts.
Stall - Yue Lai Xiang Cuttlefish Kang Kong Since 1939
Cuttlefish Kang Kong (S$5.00/ US$3.55)
A salad of cuttlefish, kangkong (a.k.a. water spinach), pineapple, tau pok (a variety of beancurd) and lettuce in sweet bean sauce dressing, topped with crushed peanuts. The cuttlefish was crisp to the bite, and the sweetness of the dressing complemented the ingredients to a tee. We ordered the small portion, which is just right for 2 people; while the medium and large portions are sold at $10 and $15 respectively.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Stall - Yue Lai Xiang Cheng Teng (S$2.00 / US$1.40)

Sold at the stall just next to that selling the cuttlefish kangkong, it is a sweet dessert soup served either hot or cold. Boiled with dried longans, the soup contains mung beans, barley, sweet potato, sago and dried persimmons. Foodies with a sweet tooth will certainly like this one.

Thai Food at Carabao Restaurant, JB

Category : ,

Date: 5th June 2010
Venue: Carabao Restaurant, Johor Bahru, Johor
Country: Malaysia
Cuisine: Thai
Meal: Dinner

We were pleasantly surprised by the good food served during the last visit, so we're back to try out more of their dishes.

However, due to the dim lighting during the night time, this time around, the photos are nothing to shout about. Moreover, this time around the food ordered did not taste as good as our first visit. Wonder why.

Tom Yam Seafood Soup (RM14.90 / US$4.55)
Hot tasty tom yam soup with chucks of seafood. Real comfort food.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Petai Fried Rice (RM12.90 / US$3.95)
New item in the menu, so we just ordered it for a try. Turns out to be pretty common tasting fried rice, with petai stirred in.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Thai Sizzling Toufu (RM12.90 / US$3.95)
Deep fried toufu on a thin layer of omelette, topped with mixed vegetable, mushroom and minced meat. Ordered this thinking that our junior can have the gravy with his rice. Yet the dish turned up to be spicy as well. To think we are told this is a non-spicy dish....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Somtum (RM10.90 / US$3.30)
Thai green papaya salad; strips of green papaya, cucumber and carrot with thai dressing, topped with deep fried anchovies. We ordered the mildly hot version (with only 2 chili padi). The reduced spiciness may have resulted in the lessened appeal of the dish.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Otak-Otak (RM18.90 / US$5.75)
Made from steaming a mixture of spices, coconut milk and chunks of seafood on a bed of thai basil, wrapped in aluminium foil. We do not fancy this dish though as it taste too strongly of basil. The most expensive dish of the night, yet the most disappointing.

This restaurant is famous for their sword fish yong tau foo.

The food items are cooked briefly in boiling broth or deep fried, and served either in soup and on their own. This dish is commonly eaten with rice or noodles, and chilli, sweet bean paste or soy sauce as dipping.

Yong Tau Foo Soup (RM28.50 / US$8.65)
Our yong tau foo soup with our selection of food items. We chose fishballs, meatballs, slices of bittergourd, chilli, tau pok, deep fried egg-plant, pacific clams and green leafy vegetables. The fish balls are springy to the bite, while the fish paste items are cooked 'al dente'. The soup is clear and light. Each item is priced at RM0.80 or RM1.00. Since we were in the vicinity, we decided to explore ten mile junction for dining options. Sheng Siong steamboat is one of the stalls located in a 'coffeeshop' near the anchor Sheng Siong Supermarket. There was a healthy crowd and most were having the steamboat so we gave it a try.

Pomfret Steamboat (S$15.00 / US$10.60)
Small-sized steamboat meant for 2-3 pax. Other sizes at $25 and $35. The other choices of steamboat includes red grouper, seafood, sliced fish and fried fish. Milky fish soup base with slices of pomfret, beancurd, yam, tomato and leafy vegetables. Good thing is they have free refill of soup, so we can drink to our hearts' content.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Crispy Prawn Roll (S$10.00 / US$7.10)
Whole prawn wrapped in beancurd skin with strips of carrot. Served with pickled vegetables (cucumber, carrots and pineapple) and thai chili dipping. The prawn rolls are not crispy enough though.
